The scene is Mayaro, a remote village in the Trinidad of the time. Shellie is charmed by Rosalie Gidharee, an East Indian girl living very close to him. He is also flattered by the friendship of her father who takes him along to work on a little plantation at Cedar Grove beside the River Ortoire. And why is Gidharee doing this? Because Shellie's father is ill and compassionate Gidharee sees no harm in Shellie going with him to his little plantation and taking some of the produce back home. But seeing that Rosalie cares for the young man Gidharee begins to think of much further ahead — of marriage for his daughter. Gidharee has four big Tobago dogs, of which Shellie is fond. But Shellie has his eyes on a new friend, Joan, of whom Rosalie is not so fond. So naturally Gidharee gets to know of Joan, and he himself is not amused. He gives the dogs Dragon's Blood, a stimulating, maddening liquid. All these elements get together to make GREEN DAYS BY THE RIVER the story it is. <br />Michael Anthony is an eminent Caribbean author and historian. Born in Mayaro, Trinidad, in 1930, he pursued his, career as a writer first in the United Kingdom (1954-1970) , in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he spent only two years, and then in Trinidad. To date, Anthony has published 33 titles, mainly novels and histories. He has also been a contributor to many anthologies and journals. In 1979 he was awarded the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) for his contribution to Literature. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of the West Indies in 2003, and a NAÉIS Lifetime Award in 2013. <br />
